what is conscription?
forced enlistment to the armed forces
why was there conscription in Canada?
Because as the men continued, less men wanted to enlist, and Borden wanted to ensure Canada continued to fight
what were some problems with conscription?
-Borden promised no conscription in the beginning
-many thought they already did their duty (supplies, food, etc.)
-brutality and profiteering
-riots and protests against Military Service Act (conscription is now law) in Quebec
How did Borden influence the election votes?
-All male AND female armed forces could vote
-All mothers, daughters, and wives of soldiers could vote
-denied the vote to conscientious objectors and to people from enemy countries
what are conscientious objectors?
people who opposed war on religious grounds
why was Canada divided during the election?
French Canadians supported Germany and accused of being cowards, British Canadians accused of being dictators and Borden trying to rig elections
what was the wars impact on the Homefront?
-women were thought of more highly
-more job opportunities for women
-most women could vote
-booming economic system
what was the Homefront’s impact on the war?
gave supplies and military help, and less food for people at home
