what were the 2 key events that changed the direction of the war?
Russia collapsing and negotiating peace with Germany, and the USA joining the war
why did the USA join the war?
they were still upset about the sinking of lusitania and finds out about the telegram from Germany sent to Mexico asking them to attack the USA
Why did Russia collapse and want peace with Germany?
thousands of people died at home, Czar Nicholas forced to abdicate and later him and his entire family were executed. Vladimir Lenin takes over and is supported by people by promising “peace and bread” → on March 3rd 1918, they negotiate a truce with Germany → Russia gives up massive territory to Germany → shifted war in Europe to the western front → Great powers have the advantage
what was the 100 days campaign?
a “desperate offensive” launched by Germany - attack France on multiple points and win in multiple places - take Ypres, somme, and passchendale. Allies “rally” and launch the offensive 100 days campaign (want to defeat Germany in 100 days)
