first 2 years
description: simple, repetitive movements, sometimes with objects or own body

pretend play
3-8 years and 8-15
description: substitutes make-believe, imaginary and dramatic situations for real ones. eg. playing house
areas of development: symbolic representations, pretending, language, problem solving
abilities; invention, imagination, interpretation, interpretation of roles, imitation, self monitoring,
games with rules
6-15 years: play is more formal and governed by fixed rules. eg. hopscotch
areas of development: understanding and adhesion to convention, strategic thought social and meta-social.

constructive play
3-15 years: manipulation of objects in order to construct something. eg building with blocks
areas of development: psychomotor, goal-directed, planning, problem solving, spatial recognition
