Plate Boundaries Flashcards
Continental-Oceanic Boundary
More dense oceanic plate goes under the less dense continental plate and creates mountains and volcanoes
Oceanic-Oceanic Boundary
Both oceanic plates are dense, but the plate with the most density goes under the less dense plate creating deep ocean trenches and volcanoes
Transform(Slip-Strike) Boundary
Two plates sliding next to each other
Divergent Boundary
Two plates moving apart
Convergent Boundary
Two plates moving toward each other
Subduction Zone
Where the oceanic crust starts to melt and magma rises up to the surface through a volcano
Fault
A break or crack in the middle of a plate
Plate Boundary
The edges of plate tectonics
Ideas
Different boundaries cause different things
They move in a certain direction because of the mid-Atlantic Ridge
Mid-Atlantic Ridge
The largest mountain range in the world. Is a divergent boundary. Is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean
Creation of Mountains
- This occurs when two continental plates collide
- —-Since the densities are nearly the same
- ———For example, if you place your finger tips together and push up with equal force with both of your hands, your fingers will be pounded upward. This is similar to the collision of the continental plates
- Mountains can also form during a collision of a continental and an oceanic plate
- —-Since oceanic plate has a greater density than the continental plate there is no equal amount of pressure. The oceanic plate moves under the continental plate. Due to this, the result is that the continental plate pushes upward creating mountains
Continental-Continental Boundary
A boundary with the least amount of density that pushes up on both sides of it and creates high mountains
