EarthQuakes Flashcards
S Waves
A body wave that is considered secondary waves because they come second in the earthquake. They can only travel through solids 3.5 km per second.
Love Waves
A surface wave that is perpendicular to the wave’s directions, they move through solids.
Rayleigh Waves
A surface wave that travels in solid ground causing the ground to rumble and lots of damage. They move in rolling motion (Counterclockwise), they also cause a lot of damage.
EarthQuake
A shaking of the Earth caused by the movement of a tectonic plate.
Shadow Zone
Parallel areas of the side of the earth where earthquake waves seem to vanish
Body Waves
Waves that come from the center of the earth
Surface waves
Waves that move from the surface
S Wave Ideas
- Body Wave
- Particles move Perpendicular to the wave
- only moves through solids
- Slower than P Waves
- goes through the crust
- It would travel solids as p waves would but stops at liquids making the rest of the earth a shadow zone
- Secondary
P Wave Ideas
- Body Wave
- First known wave from an earthquake to arrive at the seismograph
- pushes and pulls on the rock
- moves through both solids and liquid
- particles and waves both move in the same direction
- fastest kind of seismic wave
- once it enters into a more dense area, it slows down, and speeds back up in a less despise area
- Primary
Love Wave Ideas
- Surface Wave
- Particles move in an up and down motion while the wave moves in a side to side motion
- moves through solids, not liquid
- Faster than Rayleigh waves
Rayleigh Wave Ideas
- “Rolling” waves
- Surface waves
- Last a long time
- Travel in a rolling backward motion
- Cause a lot of damage
- Slowest wave
Where do waves start
At the epicenter
How waves travel
Travel in a spherical, outward motion in all directions
When do body waves become surface waves
When they get to the crust
Relationship Between waves by speed
Love waves are slower than p and S waves and faster than Rayleigh waves
P waves are the fastest of all waves
S waves are slower than p waves and faster than love and Rayleigh waves
Rayleigh waves are the slowest of all waves
Waves in order of speed and arrival
- P
- S
- Love
- Rayleigh
S and P waves arrives at different times…why?
They start at the same time, but since S waves are slower, they move farther apart
Process of an Earthquake
Two plates will slide past, push up against, or move away from each other
When this occurs, the plates move violently
They create waves
Usually happens on a plate boundary
- –Can happen in the middle of plates in places called rifts
- –Happens because they can also move
Relationship between waves and their particles
P waves’ particles goes in the same way as the wave is going
S waves’ particles goes perpendicular with the wave
Love waves’ particles move a different direction from the waves
Rayleigh Waves’ particles move in a rolling motion
P Waves
A body wave that is considered primary waves because they come first in the earthquake. They travel through solids, molten rock, and fluids at 1-5 miles per second.
