Q

Why do people get ascites in cirrhosis?

A

Reduced protein (albumin) in the blood creates lower oncotic pressure so fluid leaves blood for tissue.

Q

What is methemoglobinemia?

A

Fe3+ iron bound to hgb instead of Fe2+

  • caused by reactive oxygen species oxidizing the Fe2+ after it has bound
  • Cytochrome b5 reduces the Fe3+ of methemoglobin

Q

Why is G6PD deficiency bad for RBCs?

A

Can’t reduce NADP to NADPH which then can’t reduce glutathione.

Need glutathione to turn ROS to H2O so cell doesn’t lyse.
