Plasma composition and red cell metabolism Flashcards
Defect in RBC cytoskeletal proteins?
Hereditary spherocytosis
Why do people get ascites in cirrhosis?
Reduced protein (albumin) in the blood creates lower oncotic pressure so fluid leaves blood for tissue.
What causes the O2 saturation curve to shift to the right (decreased Hb-O2 affinity)?
H+ increases
P-CO2 increase
Temp increases
BPG increase
What causes O2 saturation curve to shift left (increased Hb-O2 affinity)?
H+ decrease
P-CO2 decrease
Temp decrease
What causes acquired methemoglobinemia?
benzocain
What is methemoglobinemia?
Fe3+ iron bound to hgb instead of Fe2+
- caused by reactive oxygen species oxidizing the Fe2+ after it has bound
- Cytochrome b5 reduces the Fe3+ of methemoglobin
Why is G6PD deficiency bad for RBCs?
Can’t reduce NADP to NADPH which then can’t reduce glutathione.
Need glutathione to turn ROS to H2O so cell doesn’t lyse.
