Plaque/biofilm Flashcards
- Plaque Biofilm
bacterial plaque/microbial plaque
- Plaque Biofilm/bacterial plaque/microbial plaque
a. Dense, non-calcified, organized mass of cooperating colonies enclosed in a gel-like intercellular matrix
b. Formation
i. Initial formation = 2 hours
ii. 2 days to double – can visually see it at this point
c. Initial colonizers = Gram Positive Aerobic and facultative organisms (actinomyces and streptococcus)
i. Non-motile
d. Secondary colonizers = Gram Negative Anerobic
i. DO NOT colonize a clean tooth
ii. Pi and Pg, spirochetes, motile rods
iii. Etiological source of caries and perio disease
e. Timeline = pellicle 🡪 then healthy bacteria 🡪 bad bacteria 🡪 plaque maturation
f. Matrix
i. When nutrients added these products get produced:
1. Glucans (dextrans) & Fructans (levans)
g. Plaque removal
i. Plaque cannot be removed w/ water spray
ii. Anerobic glycolysis results in pH drop from 7.0 🡪 4.5 = demineralization
5. Calculus
