What are best practices for windbreaks?
woody evergreen is best suited fro windbreaks
should be at LEAST THREE evergreen PLANTS deep to be effective
at LEAST TEN DECIDIOUS plants deep
grasses and shit don’t do anything
veg should be placed in the DIRECT PATH OF PREVAILING WIND
VEG should provide adequate spacing from a structure to provide insulationg “dead air” (distance for offset equals at least half of the plants height away)
all being equal TALLER THICKER windbreaks are superior
What is a parkway?
serve as linear parks that are also transporation corridors between specific features within a city including parks, cultural sites, and commercial areas
they often follow linear natural features such as rivers
What is a greenway? How does it differ from a parkway?
Created as green buffers to protect key ecolgoical resources
often fall on linear pattern but connect key natural resources and landmarks (lakes. protected areas etc)
may provide trails passive recreation interpretive signage etc - but nothing that will detract from ecological character or value
What is considered the three sizes of parks
neighborhood 1 to 10acrs
large urban 20 to 40 acres
regional park - size varies - serves mulitple jurisdictions
What is best orientation for sportsfeilds?
baseball - 45 degree pitch aligns with NE
all other sports fields - goals / ends face N to S
What 7 criteria should be considered for siting a playground?
protection away from roads and ciruclation
clear entries and exits - off of PED only paths
substantial buffering - away from incompatible uses like water raods intersections etc
safe and aeasy access to associated buildings and activities - use and faciliites should not be cut off
open views and clear lines of site
variety of microclimates
account for wind (typ blowing from NW / NE in winter (block it) (blowing from SW in summer accept it for cooling)
What criteria should guide the design of playground features?
separate play areas according to age and allow for GROUP AND SOLItary play
integrate children with and without disabilities
water is excellent for universal play
safe surfacing (pea gravel. poured rubber, hardwood wooden fiber, shredded rubber. sand grass (esp in FALL ZONES)
COMFORT amenities
SERVICE amenities
LIGHTING
emergency call box
fencing or CONTROLLED ENTRY
SIGNAGE with park rules etc
SEATING in shade and sun
