What lines of site should be maintained for CPTED
3-6’ (no shrubs greater than 3’ trees pruned up to 6’)
What three ways is CPTED implemented?
electronic - security products. alarms. lighting. -AVOID sharp drop offs in lighting
design - minimizing blind spots and corners, eliminating dead ends and dead non visible space. regulating access points, designing with lines of site in mind
organizational - site security. door, ent. operating hours and site access
What are the 5 principles of CPTED
defensible space
natural access control
territorial reinforcement
natural surveillance
mgmt and maintenance
What is defensible space?
What three concepts does it consist of?
they are the physical suggested. pyscholgoical and social barriers that define a space for purpose of surveillance by site owner
1 territory
2 access
3surveillance
What is natural access control?
using defined entry points and physical barriers to limit access toa site - limiting access decreases opps for crime AND
makes site feel safer by defining ownership of a space
What is terrirtorial reinforcement?
companion to natural access control
uses design features such as plants. handscape walls and fences to define “sphere’s of influence” AKA PUBLIC V PRIVATE
deters crimers by making it VISIBLY clear they have entered a controlled or maintained space
Natural surveillance
maximizes visibility to increase safety - windows, lighting, site lines, ped friendly streetscapes
MGMT and MX
keep site in good working order and convey sense of security - ensure safety features are operational
Min slope necessary for proper drainage
2%
What is max slope for an athletic fieid
1 to 2% - 1% preferred
What is max slope range for sidewalk
1 to 5%
2% cross slope
What is ideal slope for a street? max?
1 to 10% max 20%
What are common slope ranges and their slope intensity?
Max slope for sitting area?
idea 1% (max 2%)
desired and max slope for lawns
5 to 10% (max 25%)
What is slope range for parking lot / max slope?
2to3 % (max 5%)
What is 4 step order to site grading?
What is more stable - walkway cut or fill?
Explain example of cut and fill section
explain example of basic cut fill calculations
Where do the highest rates of erosion occur?
on construction sites?
sediment and erosion mitigation on construction sites invovles what two basic steps
minimizing distrubance - erosion control
limited damage caused by sediments (sediment control)
list 8 erosion control best practices
LIMIT DISTURBANCE
avoid grading during wet season
stabilize soils after grading
locate non point pollutions sources (mat stockpiles) away from steep / erosible areas that drain into water bodies
cover and stablizie stockpiles
construct ditches benches and terraces at regular intervals to divert runoff away from areas being graded
line drainage channels with rip rap
add check dams in swales to reduce runoff velocity
List 6 sediment control best practices
sediment basins
sediment traps
filter fabric fencing
strawbale barriers
drain inlet protection traps
vegetated filter strips
