Plants N5 Flashcards
What are a plants organs
Roots
Stems
Leaves
Function of the upper epidermis
Transparent layer which allows sunlight to pass through to the cells below
Palisade mesophyll function
Closely packed cells which contain many chloroplasts the main site of photosynthesis
Spongy mesophyll function
A layer of cells that contains many air spaces where water evaporates
Lower epidermis function
Under side of leaf it contains the stomata
Stomata function
Pores on the underside of the leaf which allow gas exchange and escape of water vapour
Guard cells function
2 cells which control the opening of the stomata
Vein function
Contains the xylem and phloem for water and sugar transport
What is transpiration
The process of what water moving through a plant and its evaporation rough the stomata
How does water and minerals enter a plant
Through specialised cells called roots hair cells by osmosis
Describe Xylem
Made of dead cells
Rings of lignin - stop the tube from closing under pressure
Xylem function
Transports water and minerals up the stem
Name factors that increase the rate of respiration
Temprature increase
Wind speed increase
Surface area increase
Humidity decreases
Name the 2 things used to measure the ate of transpiration
Bubble photometer
Mass photometer
Phloem function
To transport sugar up and down the stem
