Plants As Organisms Flashcards
Why does photosynthesis slow down in cold conditions?
The activity of enzymes which control photosynthesis slows down at lower temperatures
Where does the energy for photosynthesis come from?
Sunlight
Which gas would you collect to show that a plant is photosynthesising?
Oxygen
Name three substances used for storage in plants
Starch, fats and oils
What is meant by the term ‘carnivorous plant’?
A plant which captures animals (eg. insects) and digests them
Why do leaves have stomata?
To allow gases to diffuse in and out of the leaf
How so plants prevent wilting?
The stomata close to stop diffusion of water out of the leaf
By what process does water vapour move out of the leaves?
Diffusion - known as transpiration
What conditions could increase the rate of transpiration?
More wind
Increased temperature
Drier air
What are the names of the two transport tissues in flowering plants?
Xylem and phloem
How do shoots bend towards the light?
Unequal distribution of auxin causes unequal growth of the shoot
Why is it important to use plant hormones correctly in agriculture?
The hormones might kill trees or other plants as well as weeds
Why are broad-leaved plants more likely to be affected by weed killers than narrow-leaved plants?
They have a larger surface area and absorb more weed killer, so they go into uncontrolled growth and die
Where is the male gamete of a flowering plant produced?
Anther
Why do some flowers produce nectar?
To attract insects so they pick up pollen when they feed on the nectar
