Environmental Change And The Distribution Of Organisms Flashcards
How do new predators change communities?
They eat prey so there will be less prey for other carnivores. The numbers of all predators could go down.
Why are there so few animals living in very cold regions such as the Arctic?
Very few plants grow there, so there is little food for herbivores. Few herbivores results in few carnivores.
What is a quadrat?
A square frame which may also be divided into a grid
What is a transect?
A line drawn between two points to make ecological measurements
What is meant by repeatable results?
The experiment is repeated by the same person with the same apparatus and the results are the same
How can you make sure an investigation is valid?
Only the independent variable should affect the results, all other variables must be controlled.
Name some abiotic (non-living) factors
Temperature
Rainfall
Light
Oxygen levels in water
Name some biotic (living) environmental factors
New predators
New disease
New plants (new food or habitats)
Which indicator species are used to indicate levels of air pollution?
Lichens
Which indicator species are used to indicate levels of water pollution?
Invertebrate animals
Why do some birds fly further north to find nesting sites?
Climate change has caused it to become warm enough further north for the birds to nest, and possibly too warm further south
