Genetic Manipulation Flashcards
Suggest why it is more difficult to successfully clone animals than plants
Animal embryos must be split into groups of cells and then each group is transplanted into a host ‘mother’. It takes longer for the animals to develop and sometimes there are not enough hosts and embryos may die during development
Name a quick, cheap way of cloning plants
Taking cuttings from mature plants
Name the two cells needed in adult cell cloning
An adult cell such a skin cell, and am egg cell
Give a benefit of adult cell cloning
Development of cloned animals that have been genetically engineered to produce valuable proteins in their milk.
Cloning can save animals from extinction
Give a disadvantage of adult cell cloning
Concerns about the ethics of cloning.
Cloning limits the variation in a population (limits the gene pool). This can be a problem for natural selection if the environment changes.
Concerns about using the technique to clone humans in the future
What is used to cut genes out of chromosomes?
Enzymes
Why do GM crops often give higher yields than traditional crops?
They may not be killed by herbicides, or they may be modified to kill pests that eat them
Suggest why farmers grow GM crops.
GM crops give a higher yield, which therefore means more profit for the farmer.
Give some advantages of genetic technology

Give some disadvantages of genetic technology

Why do farmers have to buy new GM seed every year?
Because GM crops are infertile.
