Homeostasis Flashcards
Which organ controls blood sugar levels?
Pancreas
Why is it important to control our body temperature?
So that the enzymes will work properly, too low they stop working, too high they denature
Where is carbon dioxide made?
In the cells during respiration
Where is urea made?
In the liver
What two processes occur in the kidney to make urine?
Filtration and (selective) reabsorption
What is ADH and where is it produced?
A hormone that controls the concentration of water in the blood, produced by the pituitary gland
What is the purpose of dialysis?
Dialysis removes the urea from the blood and restores normal concentrations of substances in the blood
What is the alternative treatment to dialysis?
Kidney transplant
What are antigens?
Proteins on the surface of cells
What is the main advantage of a kidney transplant compared with dialysis?
The patient does not have to be attached to a machine every few days
Where is blood temperature monitored?
The thermoregulatory centre in the brain
Explain why sweating cools the body
The water in the sweat evaporates. Energy from the skin is used to turn the water into water vapour so the skin cools
Which hormone reduces the level of glucose in the blood?
Insulin
Which hormone causes blood sugar to rise?
Glucagon
