plants Flashcards
Xylem
Transports water and minerals upward through the plant from roots to leaves
Phloem
Carries food downward from leaves to roots
Where are stomata and guard cells located? What is their function?
- Stomata: Found on underside of leaf, porous allow gas exchange
- Guard cells: Occurs in pairs around stomata, permit open/ close of stomata
Trace the pathway of water and dissolved minerals as it is absorbed from the soil and reaches the vascular tissue (xylem of the root)
Water is transported upward through the xylem. Transpiration is the exhalation of water vapor through the stomata causing a decrease in pressure.
Identify the major location of photosynthesis in leaves and why this occurs
The upper epidermis is the top part of the leaf and is transparent so light can penetrate.
Where are most chloroplasts found in the leaf?
Found beneath upper epidermis
Monocot
One cotyledon, parallel leaf venation, scattered stem vascular bundle, fibrous root system, floral petals in multiples of 3
Dicot
Two cotyledon, net-like leaf ventanation, X root vascular bundle, tap root system, floral petals in multiples of 4-5
