Plant Tropisms Flashcards
What is growth in response to a stimulus called?
A tropism
What is a light stimulus called?
The photo-stimulus
What is a gravity stimulus called?
A gravi-stimulus
What do plants show when they respond to their environment?
Sensitivity (irritability)
What is a positive response?
Growth towards a stimulus.
What is a negative response?
Growth away from a stimulus.
What is an example of a positive phototropism?
A stem growing towards light.
What is an example of a negative gravi-tropism?
A stem growing upwards (away from gravity)
What is an example of a positive gravi-tropism but a negative phototropism?
A root growing downwards (away from light but towards gravity)
What is Auxin?
A growth substance.
A plant hormone.
What can a hormone spray do to grapes and apples?
Cause them to develop without fertilisation. This means they have no seeds.
What does auxin do to cell growth in roots?
Slows it down.
