Plant Transport topic 9.1 and 9.2 Flashcards
STATE HOW mineral ions and water are taken up by the roots of plants.
Mineral ions - diffusion, mass flow, fungal hyphae, active transport
Water - osmosis
List and Describe the factors that affect the rates of transpiration (and know the definition of transpiration).
Transpiration is the loss of water from the leaves and stems of plants called stomata
Light - More light = more transpiration (causes stomata to open, more photosynthesis, more heat so more transpiration)
Temperature - Higher temperatures = more transpiration (more cooling necessary)
Wind - More wind = more transpiration (evaporating water is removed faster)
Soil Water - Less soil water = less transpiration (loss of turgor pressure, stomata close)
CO2 - High CO2 = less transpiration (stomata mostly close since they don’t need to open)
Humidity - Higher humidity = less transpiration (decreases rate of diffusion of water out of the plant due to more water being in the air)
Outline how sucrose is transported in the phloem in this process.
Sucrose gets transported through phloem tissue from source (where sugar is produced, photosynthetic tissue, leaves and stems) to sink (organs that use and store sugar, roots, seeds, fruits). The phloem move sucrose both towards and away from the roots
Look at the diagram and Identify the process of translocation
You better have looked at it or you’re fucked
