Plant Transport Systems Flashcards
What do phloem transport?
Sugar
What do xylem transport?
Water
What are root hair cells?
They are specialised root epidermis cells
What are xylem vessels?
They are continuous tubes of dead, hollow cells that run the entire length of the plant to transport water and minerals
What is lignin?
It is a woody substance to strengthen and support the xylem
What is the upper epidermis?
It is a layer of transparent cells that allow light to pass through
What is the lower epidermis?
It is a layer of cells containing stomata
What is the spongy mesophyll?
Plant leaf tissue with loosely packed cells and air spaces between them
What are guard cells?
Pairs of cells which can change shape to open or close the stoma
What is a stoma?
It is a pore in the lower epidermis which allows carbon dioxide into and oxygen out of the leaf
What is the root epidermis?
The outer layer of cells of a root
What is stomata?
Tiny pores in the leaf epidermis
What is transpiration?
The evaporation of water through the stomata of leaves
