Plant Transport Systems Flashcards
Why is water required?
For photosynthesis and maintenance of the plant
What is the purpose of the xylem and two other facts?
Transport minerals and vitamins
Hollow
Made up of dead cells
Why is lignin in the xylem?
For support to withstand changes in pressure as water moves through the stem
What is the purpose of the phloem and 3 other facts?
To transport food from photosynthesis all around the plant
Made of live material
Contains end walls
Has companion cells
What can excess glucose be used for?
Starch, cellulose and energy
What are root hairs?
Microscopic structures
Why do root hair have projections?
To increase the amount of area allowed to absorb water
What is transpiration?
The loss of water through leaves
How is water transported?
From the soil up through the stem to be used in photosynthesis and maintenance of the plant
Describe the uptake and movement of water through the plant
Water is taken up from the soil into the roots through osmosis
Water is passed up the xylem
Drawn into the leave through osmosis
Water evaporates into air sacs in the leaf
Water moves out if the leaf into the air through the stomata
Describe the structure of the leaf
Waxy cuticle Upper epidermis Palisade mesophyll cells Spongy mesophyll cells Lower epidermis Stomata Guard cells
