DNA Flashcards
Describe the structure of DNA
DNA is a double stranded helix which had a sugar phosphate backbone
What do the function of DNA
To carry information which allows the cell to produce all the protein needed to function
What are genes?
Genes are sections of DNA which control our characteristics and enable our bodies to function properly
What are proteins up of?
Long chains of amino acids
What are the four bases that make up the genetic code?
A-T
C-G
What determines the type of amino acid?
The base sequence
How many different types of amino acids are there?
20
What is the function of the mRNA?
To carry the code from the DNA to a ribosome where the protein is assembled from the amino acids
Describe a protein
Proteins are organic compounds composed of atoms of carbon nitrogen oxygen and hydrogen. These are large complex 3-D molecules
What is the function of insulin and what is the type of protein?
Insulin is a hormone and it controls sugar levels in the blood
