Mitosis Flashcards
Describe stage 1 of mitosis
The chromosomes appear as long strands in the nucleus
Why is it important that daughter cells and mother cells have the same chromosome complement?
Because they must be identical and abnormal mitosis can lead to cancer cells in the body
Describe stage 2 of mitosis
The chromosome doubles and becomes visable
Describe stage 3 of mitosis
The nuclear membrane disappears and the chromosomes line up across the equator of the cell. Spindle fibres begin to form
Describe stage 4 of mitosis
The CHROMATIDS are pulled to either pole of the cell by the spindle fibres
Describe step 5 of mitosis
The nuclear membrane reformed around the new chromosomes and the cytoplasm begins to divide
What is stage 6 of mitosis?
The cytoplasm divides completely and two daughter cells are produced. Containing the EXACT genetic information as the mother cell.
