Plant Transport Flashcards
What do xylem vessels transport?
Water and mineral ions
What do phloem vessels transport?
Sugars produced by photosynthesis
What are vascular bundles?
Groups of phloem, xylem and support tissue found in stems and roots of plants
What is the transport mechanism in plants?
Mass flow
Explain how xylem vessels form?
Lignin laid down inbetween cellulose fibres in the cell wall
Impermeable so cytoplasm dies
End walls break down
Explain how the structure of xylem makes it suitable for transport?
Dead empty vessels - wide lumen so unrestricted water flow
End walls break down - long continuous tube
Lignified cell walls - vessels dont break down under tension
Pits
What are pits?
Areas with no lignin which allow for the lateral movement of water
What are tracheids?
Smaller, narrower xylem cells with tapered ends found in less advanced plants
What are parenchyma?
Living plant cells with no thickening
What are xylem fibres?
Narrow and thick plant cells with a small lumen
What are xylem fibres used for in plants?
Structure/support
