Plant Tissues-Aimee Valensky Flashcards
Meristematic tissue
This tissue is actively dividing tissue in which new cells are continually formed by mitosis
Permanent tissue
This tissue is tissue that is already differentiated to perform a specific function
What are the Two types of meristem?
Apical and Lateral
What are the Types of permanent tissue?
Epidemis, Parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma and vascular tissue.
What are the two types of vascular tissue?
Xylem and phloem
Apical meristem?
The apical meristem consists of groups of cells that are found near the tips of roots and stems and are responsible for growth in length by mitosis
Lateral meristem?
Lateral meristem is found between the xylem and the phloem in the vascular bundles of dicotyledonous plants and is known as cambium
What is the basic structure of an apical meristem?
- The cells are relatively small
- The cell walls are thin
- Vacuoles are absent
- The cells are cube-shaped
- The cells nuclei are large and prominent
- There are no intercellular spaces
Functions of the Apical meristem?
New cells that form through mitosis result in the primary growth (growth in length) of the plant
What is the basic structure of an Lateral meristem?
- Its cells are similar to those of the apical meristem, except that the cells are flatter and slightly elongated
