Inorganic molecules- Amy Bowman Flashcards
What is an Organic molecule?
They are chemical compounds that contain the element Carbon and are produced by living organisms
What is an inorganic molecule?
Chemical compounds that don’t contain Carbon
Arent produced by living organisms ( water, gases mineral salts)
Is water an organic or inorganic molecule?
Inorganic molecule
What are the main functions of water in an organism?
To be: solvent, reagent during hydrolysis, a transporting agent, lubricant, regulate body temp, give shape & rigidity
Where do chemical reactions in living organisms occur?
In water
What are mineral salts?
Inorganic substances needed by living organisms
How do plants absorb mineral salts?
Plant roots absorb from soil
How do humans & animals obtain mineral salts?
Obtained from the food they eat
Which two groups are mineral salts divided into?
Macroelements & Microelements
What are macroelements?
Mineral salts need in large quantities
What are microelements?
Mineral salts need in small quantities
List 4 examples of macroelements
Calcium, Phosphorus, Sodium, Potassium
List 2 examples of microelements
Iron, Iodine
What deficiency diseases can humans get from a lack of Calcium?
Rickets (children), osteoporosis
What deficiency disease can humans get from a lack of Iron?
Anaemia
