Plant physiology Jessica Adonis Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of a tissue
A
A group of more or less similarly differentiated cells which perform a common function
2
Q
Main permanent plant tissue
A
Epidermis Parenchyma Sclerenchyma Collenchyma Vascular tissue
3
Q
Epidermis main function
A
-protects the underlying tissues from injury and desiccation (drying out)
4
Q
Parenchyma main functions
A
- stores food and water
- produces carbohydrates through photosynthesis
- intercellular spaces allow gaseous exchange to take place
- vacuole provides rigidity as a result of turgor pressure exerted by the cell sap
5
Q
Sclerenchyma main functions
A
- serves as strengthening tissue
- provides mechanical support to the plant
6
Q
Collenchyma main funtions
A
- serves as strengthening tissue
- provides mechanical support to the plant
7
Q
Vascular tissue main function
A
- water and minerals are transported by the xylem tissue from the roots to the rest of the plant
- serves as strengthening and support tissue for the plant
8
Q
Definition of meristematic tissue
A
Actively dividing tissue in which cells are continually formed by mitosis
9
Q
Apical meristem
A
- Consist of groups of cells that are found near the tips of roots and stems
- Responsible for growth in length by mitosis
10
Q
Lateral meristem
A
- Found between the xylem and the phloem in the vascular bundles of dicotyledonous
- a.k.a. cambium
