Plant structure and Photosynthesis Flashcards
Name 3 plant organs
Stems, roots and leaves
What are organs made of?
Tissues
What are leaves made of (3)?
Mesophyll tissue (Where most of the photosynthesis occurs)
Xylem and Phloem (transport water, mineral ions and sucrose around the plant)
Epidermal tissue - covers the whole plant
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water -> Glucose + Oxygen
-> [sunlight and chlorophyll needed]
Where does photosynthesis happen?
In chloroplasts
What do chloroplasts contain that allow photosynthesis to happen?
Chlorophyll
What does chlorophyll do?
absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to convert CO2 and water into glucose. Oxygen is also produced as a by-product
How does water reach cells?
Through the Xylem
How does CO2 reach the cells?
It diffuses
