Clones and identical twins
Describe DNA fingerprinting (or Genetic fingerprinting)
A way of cutting up a person’s DNA into small sections and then separating them.
Every person’s genetic fingerprint has a unique pattern. This means you can tell people apart by comparing maple of their DNA
What are the 2 things DNA fingerprinting is used in?
1) Forensic science
2) Paternity testing
Describe how DNA fingerprinting is used in forensic science
DNA taken from a crime scene is compared with a DNA sample taken from a suspect
What is paternity testing?
To see if a man is the father of a particular child
A nation genetic database could be created. Give an advantage and the disadvantages
Ad: DNA from a crime scene could be checked against everyone in the country to see whose it was
Dis: Big invasion of privacy, ad they worry how safe the data would be and what else it might be used for
Dis: Scientific problems - false positives can occur if errors are made in the procedure or if the data is misinterpreted
