Diffusion Flashcards
How do particles move?
Particles move RANDOMLY, and after a bit they end up EVENLY SPACED
Natural tendency for stuff to SPREAD OUT
What is DIFFUSION?
It is the GRADUAL MOVEMENT of particles from places where there are LOTS of them, to places where there are FEWER of them
Diffusion Definintion
DIFFUSION is the SPREADING OUT of PARTICLES from an area of HIGH CONCENTRATION to an area of LOW CONCENTRATION
What states can diffusion take place in?
Solutions and Gases;
particles can move about randomly in these substances
The BIGGER the DIFFERENCE in concentration…
…the FASTER the diffusion rate.
Give an example of diffusion through gas
When perfume diffuses through the air in a room
Dissolved substances can move [ ] of celsl through [ ]
in and out
diffusion
Only small molecules can diffuse through cell membranes, give some examples…
Oxygen
Glucose
Amino Acids
Water
Give some examples of BIG MOLECULES that can’t diffuse through CELL MEMBRANES
Starch
Proteins
Particles move from [ ] concentration to [ ] concentration through a cell membrane
High
Low
What happens due to the particles moving randomly through the cell membrane?
Particles move through both ways, but if there are a lot more particles on one side of the membrane, there is a net overall movement from that side
