Plant responses Flashcards
1
Q
what is the function of an auxin
A
- cell enlargement
- apical dominance
- leaf and fruit abscission
2
Q
what is apical dominance
A
when the shoot apex is growing ,this usually inhibit development of the lateral buds on the stem beneath
3
Q
what happens to auxins in the tip of a stem when there is light in one direction
A
- the auxins produced in the tip of the stem move down .
- the will move along the dark side of the stem , where there will be a high conc. of auxins , causing cell elongation on the dark side
- the cells on the side receiving the light will not elongate but the stem will bend towards the light.
4
Q
what happens to auxins in the shoot tips when gravity when it lays horizontally
A
- the auxins move towards the centre of gravity and stimulate cell elongation i.e high conc. of auxins
- the region furthest away inhibits cell elongation , causing the shoot (plumule) to bend upwards, away from the centre of gravity
- in the root tips, auxins move towards gravity and inhibit cell elongation.
- the region of the furthest away from the gravity stimulus still cause elongation and the root bends in the direction of gravity .
