human eye and ear Flashcards
what is binocular vision
Is the use of 2 eyes with overlapping fields of view that make one large field of view.
Short-sightedness (myopia)
Objects nearby are seen clearly
– distant objects are out of focus
Caused by abnormal curvature
of cornea/elongated eyeball
-corrected by concave lens
what is the reaction of the pupil to low light intensity
-circular muscles relax
-pupil dilates allowing more light to enter the eye
-
Long-sightedness (hypermetropia)
Distant objects can be seen clearly
Nearby objects are out of focus
Caused by a shorter eyeball/abnormally flat cornea
-corrected by convex lens
Astigmatism
Curve of the lens is not uniform (even)
-Results in incoming light rays to be
refracted in 2 ways (multiple focal points)
Creates an unclear, blurred image
Cataracts
Clouding of the eye’s clear, transparent lens
Prevents light reaching the retina – causes blurred vision
Proteins in lens clump together – causes the clouding (develops slowly over time)
what are the two types of deafness and what device helps with deafness
- congeital and adventitious
- hearing aid
what is a cochlear implant
- helps profoundly deaf people
- functions as organ of corti
what is otitis media and how is it treated
- middle ear infection
- excess fluid in the ear because pus does not drain out
- grommet which helps with drainage
