Central Nervous System Flashcards
3 layers of the meniges
- dura matar
- arachnoid
- pia matar
functions of the CNS
- gathers information using senses
- interpret and resond to stimuli
- processes information
cerebrospinal fluid function
- cushions the brain and spinal cord form shock and keeps nervous tissue moist
the cerebrum has to hemispheres split by the ?
And what is its function?
corpus collosum
It allows for communication between the 2 hemispheres
what to structures increase surface area in the cerebrum
sulci and the gyri
what are the 4 lobes that the cerebrum is separated into
- frontal ( motor area: voluntary movements e.g speech)
- parietal ( interpreting sensations)
- occipital ( sight)
- temporal ( hearing , tasting and smelling )
the cerebellum is split by the ?
vermis
what structure increases the surface area of the cerebellum
folia
function of the cerebrum
voluntary actions: receives and interprets all sensations ( sight ,hearing ,smell, taste and touch)
function of the cerebellum
co - ordination of voluntary movements ( walking ,running and maintaining muscle tone )
function of medulla oblongata
involuntary actions: breathing ,dilation and constriction of blood vessels, swallowing
function of the hypothalamus
controls body temperature, blood pressure ,sleep, appetite, thirst and emotions
what are functions of afferent and efferent nerves
Afferent nerves take signals from a receptor towards the CNS,and efferent nerves bring signals from the CNS towards and effector e.g muscle
what are the main functions of the spinal cord
- works with the medulla oblongata to control reflex actions
- impulses are sent toward and away from the brain via the cord.
ataxia
damage of the cerebellum causing lack of muscle co-ordination
