Plant Reproduction Flashcards
what is a flowering plant known as?
angiosperms
what is pollination?
is the way plants reproduce and happens when the pollen grain reaches the stigma
what are the two types of pollination?
self pollination and cross pollination
what is self pollination?
is when a plant reproduces by it self
what is cross pollination?
is when a pollen grain from a flower mixes with another plant
what helps cross pollination?
wind or insects
what is cross pollination better then self pollination?
since it creates diversity,
what is the process of pollination?
1- pollen gets trapped by the sticky sugary fluid in the stigma. This provides the pollen with nutrients and tr iggers it to burst open (pollen tube) way down into stigma.
2- the the pollen tube allows the pollen grain to go into the ovule and the male and females gametes meet and them fertilizes the pollen grain in the ovum
3- when fertilization happens it then creates a zygote.
4- then the zygote splits into an embryo
5- special tissue called the endo sperm surrounds the embryo and provides it with food
6- then this embryo becomes a seed (the ovule protects the seed by providing it with a protective coat) and then into a fruit.
what factors help the seed to burst open?
fertile soil, water and sun
what is germination?
the process of a seed opening
female part of a flowering plant?
style, stigma, ovule, ovum
male part of a flowering plant?
anther, filament
what is the function of an anther?
to hold pollen
what is the function of the petal or sepal?
to attract pollinators and to protect the orangs of the flower
how can pollen be transfered?
wind and insects (bees)
