Plant organ systems Flashcards
2 main plant organ systems
shoot system - everything above ground
root system - bellow ground
what is the root system?
takes water and nutrients from soil and transports it into teh shoot system ‘
what is the shoot system
- provides support for plant
- photosynthesis
- transports sap
grana
preforms photosynthesis in chloroplasts
vascular bundle
root and shoot system are conected by vascular bundle
xylem and phloem are both interacting
xylem - flows only one way
phloem - flows both ways
xylem vs phloem
xylem
- doest use plants energy
- cells die at maturity
phloem
- uses plants energy
- cells alive
- pump substances where they are needed
movement of water/root pressure
- nurtiesnts from soil go into the roots
- water moves through the roots
- osmosis brings water up the xylem
- water fills up causing pressure so the water moves all the way trhough teh xylem
cohesion
attractions of molecules of teh same substance
eg: water molecules when going through the xylem which is why it moves easily
Adhesion
compacity to stick to teh surface
eg: water molecules sticking to the walls of the xylem
transpiration proccess in stomata
proccess of water vapor exiting through the stomata
water reaches the leaves and turns int water vapor as it goes through teh spongy tissues
some of the vapor gets used in photosynethesis but the rest escapes through the stomata
when it escapes it causes a void that pulls more water from up the plant
the more that escapes teh more that comes up
moving nutrients process (photpsyntheis sugar)
photosyntheis creates glucose
- can either
–> mix with water and feed to the entier plant
or
—> can combine with molecules and make sucrose
- then get stored into the roots and become starch
- can be used for energy anytime
stored during summer and fall, then used in early spring
