plant lecture 3 Flashcards
Why are plant studies important?
- better crop breeds
- with climate change, plants are going to have to deal with more hostile conditions
- rapid increase in population means that more plants are needed
In what ways do plants have a simple body plan?
- fewer organ types
Where are apical and axillary meristemic tissue located?
located externally
Where are the peristyle, cambium located?
located internally
What do meristematic tissue look like?
- Dome or ring-shaped
- Cuboidal, small cells with thin walls, large nuclei, small vacuoles
What body body plan are gymnosperms similar to?
eudicots
What is morphogenesis?
the development of body form and organisation
What is cell differentiation?
the process by which cells with the same genes become different from each other
What is developmental plasticity?
describes the effect of environment on development
How is the aquatic plant Cabomba caroliniana an example of developmental plasticity?
forms different leaves depending on whether or not the apical meristem is submerged
What process accounts for the increase in plant size?
Cell division in meristems increases cell number and the potential for growth.
However, cell expansion (mainly elongation)
