Plant hormones Flashcards
Name a plant hormone
Auxin
Where is auxin produced?
Near the tips of shoots and roots and it moves backwards
What does auxin respond to?
Light (phototropism) , gravity (geotrism) an moisture
What does extra Auxin do?
Promotes growth in the shoot but inhibits the growth in the root …. this produces the desired result
Name and explain the 4 ways a shoot grows
1) Shoots grow towards light - more auxin grows on shaded side so bends towards light
2) Shoots grow away from gravity - more auxin on the lower side which causes the lower side to grow faster bending the shoot upwards
3) Roots grow towards gravity - root growing sideways will always grow on the lower side and in a root extra auxin inhibits growth and this means the cells on top elongate further and the roots bends down
4) Roots grow towards moisture - more auxin on the side with more moisture and inhibits growth on that side so it grows towards moisture
What uses,in agriculture, do plant hormones have?
Weeds = broad - leaved. Selective weedkillers contain plant hormones that only affect broad-leaved plants. This disrupts their normal growth patterns and soon kills them but leaves crops untouched.
Rooting powder contains plant hormones which helps when taking cuttings
