What do drugs do?

What are the 3 types of drugs and give an explanation of each
1) Medicinal - medical use but may not need a prescription
2) Recreational - for ‘fun’ can be illegal or legal
3) Performance enhancing - improve performance in sport
Give a view against and for performance enhancing drugs
Against - athletes may not be informed of the serious health risks
For - Athletes have the right to make their own decision on whether the risk is worth it or not
What are statins?
Prescribed drugs that lower the risk of heart and circulatory disease. Evidence say they work
What is cannabis?
An illegal drug. Scientists investigated whether chemicals in cannabis smoke caused mental health problems. Results vary. More scientific evidence needed
How many stages are there in drug testing?

What went wrong with thalidomine?
Found to be effective for morning sickness after being used as a sleeping pill. Hadn’t been tested for relieving morning sickness in pregnant women and it wasn’t known that it could pass through the placenta and affect the fetus causing abnormal limb development. 10000 babies affected and only half survived.
Name an ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ recreational drug
Hard - heroin
Soft - cannabis
Why do people use recreational drugs?
For relaxation or stress relief there may also be factors in their background or personal life which influences them to choose to use drugs.
Why are cannabis and hard drugs linked?
’ Cannabis is a stepping stone’ - desire to try harder drugs
‘ Cannabis is a gateway drug’ - brings people into contact with drug dealers
‘ It’s all down to genetics’ - certain people are more likely to take drugs so cannabis users will also try other drugs
What are the impacts of smoking?
1) causes disease of the heart , blood vessels and lungs
2) Tobacco smoke causes cancer
3) Nicotine (found in cigarettes) is addictive so its hard to stop smoking
What are the impacts of alcohol?
1) affects the nervous system and slows down the body’s reactions.
2) too much leads to impaired judgement , poor coordination and unconsciousness
3) excessive drinking causes liver disease and brain damage
4) addictive
