Plant Hormones Flashcards
What is Auxin
-a plant hormone that controls growth near tips of shoots and roots
-controls growth of plant in response to light and gravity
Where is auxin produced
I’m the tips and moves backwards to stimulate cell elongation which occurs in cells behind tips
What happens if tip of shoot removed
No auxin available and shoot May stop growing
What does extra auxin do
Promotes growth in shoot but inhibits growth in root
What happens when shoot grows towards light
Shoot is exposed to light so more auxin accumulates on side that’s in shade than the side in light
Makes cells grow faster on shaded side so root grows towards light
What happens when shoots grow away from gravity and roots grow towards gravity
When shoot growing sideways - gravity produces unequal distribution of auxin so more auxin on lower side
Causes lower side to grow after bending shoot upwards
Root growing sideways will have auxin on lower side
I’m root extra auxin inhibits growth - cells on top grow faster and root bends downwards
