What do Kidneys do
Make urine by taking waste products out of blood
How does kidneys work
Substances are filtered out of blood as passes thru the kidneys - filtration
Useful substances like glucose, some ions, right amount of water absorbed back to blood - selective reabsorption
How Is Urea removed in urine
-Urea-proteins cant be stored in body do excess amino acids converted to fats+carbohydrates that can be stored-happens in liver called deamination
-Ammonia produced as wasted from process
-ammonia toxic and converted to urea and filtered out
How is ions removed in Urine
-irons like sodium taken into body in food and absorbed into blood
-if iron content is wrong, it can upset balance of between ions and water-too much or little water drawn my osmosis
-some ions lost in sweat-not regulated
-right amount of ions reabsorbed into blood ans rest is removed
How is water removed in urine
-body constantly balances water in and out of body
-lose through sweat and lungs breathing
-cant control how much we lose this way so right amount is absorbed into blood and rest removed
What is the hormone that controls concentration of urine
Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)- in blood stream by pituitary gland
How does ADH release
Brain monitors water content and instructs pituitary gland to release ADH
according to how much needed
