What are hormones
Chemical molecules released directly into blood and carried to other parts of body but only affect particular cells in organs
Where are hormones produced
Various gland called endocrine glands-make up endocrine system
What are examples of the glands
-pituitary gland-produce hormones to regulate body conditions-called master gland as hormones act on other glands
-ovaries-produce oestrogen involved in menstrual cycle
-testes-produce testosterone which controls puberty and sperm production
-thyroid-produces thyroxine regulating body temp, heart rate, metabolism
-adrenal gland-produces adrenaline for fight or flight response
-pancreas-produces insulin to regulate blood level and glucose level
What are hormones like
-Slower actions
-act for a long time
-act in more general way
What are nerves like
-very fast action
-act for a short term
-act on very precise area
