Plant Cell Organisation Flashcards
Epidermal tissue?
covers whole plant.
Palisade mesophyll tissue?
part of leaf that most photosynthesis occurs.
Spongy mesophyll tissue?
part of leaf that contains large air spaces allowing gases to diffuse in and out of cells.
Xylem and phloem?
transport water, mineral ions, food around the plant.
Meristem tissue?
found at growing tips of shoots and roots and is able to differentiate into different types of plant cells allowing plant to grow.
How are epidermal tissue structures related to their function?
covered with waxy cuticle which helps reduce water loss by evaporation.
How is the structure of the palisade layer related to its function?
they’re near the top of the leaf so they have lots of chloroplasts where they can absorb the most light.
How is the structure of the xylem and phloem related to its function?
these support the structure and also form a network of vascular bundles that deliver water and other nutrients to the leaf and take away glucose produced by photosynthesis.
How are the tissues of leaves adapted to their function?
Examples?
for efficient gas exchange
e.g. lower epidermis is full of stomata which allow carbon dioxide to diffuse into the leaf.
