Blood Flashcards
What is the function of red blood cells?
carry oxygen from the lungs to all cells in the body.
How does the structure of a red blood cell help it with its function?
biconcave disc shape gives a larger surface area for absorbing oxygen, has no nucleus to give more space to carry oxygen.
How is a white blood cell adapted to its function?
can change shape to engulf foreign microorganisms (phagocytosis), produce antibodies that fight pathogens, produce antitoxins to neutralise toxins produced by pathogens.
How are platelets adapted to their function?
help the blood to clot at the wound to prevent excessive blood loss and stop pathogens from entering.
Plasma?
a pale yellow liquid that carries everything in the blood.
What does plasma carry?
red and white blood cells, platelets, glucose, and amino acids, carbon dioxide, urea, hormones, proteins, antibodies, and antitoxins.
