substance which increases the speed of a reaction, whilst remaining unchanged and unused.

What does an enzyme have?
A
an active site with a unique shape that fits onto the substance involved in a reaction.

What factors affect enzymes?
A
Temperature and pH.

How does temperature affect enzymes?
A
it changes the rate of an enzyme-catalysed reaction.
if the temperature increases too much, the bonds holding the enzyme together break causing the shape of the active site to change, so the substrate won’t fit.
this means the enzyme is denatured.

How does pH affect enzymes?
A
pH can also denature the enzyme.
enzymes also have an optimum pH level they work best at.
