Plant Biology Flashcards
In what conditions should plants grow in?
Damp, warmth, light/dark, air(oxygen)
What environmental conditions are necessary for germination?
Oxygen, warmth and water
What 4 things are needed for HEALTHY seed growth?
Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorus, nitrogen gas
What does germination mean?
To begin to grow or develop a plant or individual
Why do plants need Calcium?
To build cell walls
Why do plants need magnesium?
For chlorophyll formation
Why do plants need Nitrogen?
For amino acid and protein formation
Where do plants get minerals from?
Root hair cells
What are the root hair cells useful for?
Taking in minerals and water from the soil and creating a larger surface area of the root to allow the maximum amount of minerals and water to be absorbed
What is the role of the epidermis?
To protect the leaf and stop bacteria and viruses from entering the leaf
What is the role of the Palisade Mesophyll?
It is where most photosynthesis takes place. The cells are packed with chloroplasts
What is the role of the Spongy Mesophyll?
Some photosynthesis occurs here, it allows the easy movement of gases
What is the role of the vein?
It carries water in the Xylem and food in the Phloem
What is the role of the Guard Cells?
They increase and decrease in size to control the size of the stomata
What is the role of the Stomata?
It has small pores and it allows gases in and out of the leave. It is where water is lost from the leaf
