Breathing And Respiration Flashcards
What does aerobic mean?
Using oxygen
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen -> water + carbon dioxide + energy
What does the digestive system do?
Changes large insoluble molecules into small soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the blood stream
What does the circulatory system do?
Carries the small soluble food molecules and oxygen to every cell in our body and takes away unwanted waste, eg. Carbon dioxide
What is the respiration system?
Oxygen is taken into our bodies via the lungs and carbon dioxide is oxygen is then absorbed into the blood.
What is respiration?
The chemical reaction that gives energy for all living cells
What does the pleural fluid do?
Lubricates the lungs so that they do not rub against the rib cage too much
What is ventilation?
Getting air in and out of the lungs
What is gas exchange?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide at the alveoli in the lungs
What is athsma?
It develops when the bronchial tubes become swollen or inflamed.
3 properties of nicotine:
Addictive, colourless chemical, powerful poison
3 properties of tar:
Sticky brown substance, stains teeth and fingers yellow, causes bronchitis and cancer
Why do we need energy?
Muscle contraction, making new chemicals, growth and repair
What happens when you inhale?
- The diaphragm contracts and flattens
- The intercostal muscles contract
- Ribs move up and out
- The volume in the chest cavity increases
- The lungs decrease below atmospheric air pressure
