Plant & Animal Tissues Flashcards
What is a tissue?
a group of cells working together to perform a specific function
What are two types of plant tissues?
xylem and phloem
What is the xylem tissue?
transports water and minerals up the plant stem
provides structural support for the stem
made of xylem vessels and xylem parenchyma cells
What is the phloem tissue?
transports sugar and plant hormones up and down plant stem
made of sieve tube cells and companion cells
What are the 4 types of animal tissue?
squamous epithelial tissue
ciliated epithelial tissue
cartilage
muscle tissue
What is squamous epithelial tissue?
single layer of thin cells
form the inside lining of alveoli and blood vessels
What is ciliated epithelial tissue?
single layer of ciliated cells
cilia wave particles of dust along surface of tissue
from the inside lining of bronchi and small intestines
What is cartilage?
strong connective tissue
found in joints (between bones)
specialised cells secrete a matrix of callgen
What is muscle tissue?
three types -
voluntary, involuntary and cardiac muscle
