Cell Cycle & Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
cell division to form 2 genetically identical daughter cells
What does mitosis do?
growth + tissue repair
asexual reproduction
it has one division to form two daughter cells
What is cytoknesis?
divison of the cytoplasm
most visible in telephase
What are the stages of the cell cycle?
G1, S phase, G2, and mitosis
What occurs at gap phase 1?
cell grows to normal size
organelles replicate
***checkpoint for g1
cell cycle is controlled by checkpoints - if conditions are OK - then continue to S-phase ELSE cell cycle stops and cell goes through apoptosis
What happens at synthsis phase?
DNA is replicated for next cell division
What happens at gap phase 2?
cell grows
cell division proteins made
**G2 checkpoint
cell checks DNA has been replicated properly
if OK - mitosis
if mutations or damage - stop cell cycle - repair DNA
What are the four stages of mitosis?
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
***metaphase checkpoint
- cell checks chromosomes have attached to the spindle
if OK - continue
if not - fix it - or apoptosis
