Q

General Planning Principles OM A 8.2.5.e

For every flight the following questions need to be asked:

A
  1. Is a TO ALT required?
  2. Is a DEST ALT required?
  3. Is an extra DEST ALT required?
  4. Is an en route ALT required?
  5. Does the WX at DEST and any required ALTs meet planning minima?
  6. Are the required ALTs operationally and politically acceptable?
  7. Is the flight an ETOPS flight?
  8. Is the flight to OZ DEST or ALT?
  9. Is the fuel sufficient for the FLT?

Q

Take-off Alternate OM A 8.2.5.f

When would a TO ALT be required?

A

TO ALT is required if it would NOT be possible to return to the aerodrome of departure for METEO or PERF reasons based on ACTUAL WX at time of departure.

Q

Take-off Alternate OM A 8.2.5.f

What applicable planning minima apply to departure aerodrome and what must be considered when deciding if TO ALT is required?

A

When deciding if TO ALT is required consider the following at departure aerodrome:

1- NORMAL OPERATING MINIMA;

2- ENG FAILURE LIMITATIONS.

Where shall TO ALT be located?

A

Assumptions are:

  • single ENG cruise IAS
  • actual TOW

1- USA and SAUDI TO ALT will be within 60min;

2- ALL other STATES for ETOPS approved AC and crew 120min or approved ETOPS DIV time if less.

Destination Alternate OM A 8.2.5.g

At least one DEST ALT will be selected unless:

A

1- Isolated aerodrome

2- Dispatch without DEST ALT criteria are satisfied and this planning procedure is required. See below

Two separate usable RWYs will be available at DEST with WX forecasts at DEST for +/- 1hr ET of arrival to be — a) VIS>5k
b) CLD> 2000ft or CIRC+500 if greater

Note: DIV FUEL must be replaced with 15 min HOLDING FUEL (1/2 RES FUEL)

Q

When is a second DEST ALT required?

A

If:

1- During the period +/- 1hr from ET or arrival WX at DEST is below applicable planning minima; or

2- Nil METEO INFO is available

then second DEST ALT will be selected.

Q

Destination Alternate OM A 8.2.5.g

How many different types of DEST ALTs are there and how are they designated at the planning stage?

A

There are TWO types of DEST ALTs:

1- (C) Commercial Alternate (three)(designated if diversion should be LIKELY); and

2- (F) Fuel Alternate (one) (designated if diversion is considered UNLIKELY)

What applicable planning minima apply to TO ALT if one is required?

A

1- Normal operating minima apply to TO ALTs

2- ENG failure limitations must be considered

3- The CLD ceiling must be taken into account if only non precision APP or CIRC APP are available.

Q

En-route Alternate OM A 8.2.5.i

When would a ER ALT be required as part of the planning process?

A

1- Should a CALC FUEL at destination fall below minimum then ER ALT is planned so a potential diversion could be initiated to uplift extra fuel

2- If planned CONT FUEL is 3% of TRIP FUEL
(8.18.10 i.b. Contingency Fuel) ER ALT must be available and selected
