Small scale version of the main research study conducted before the main study
Aims:
Improve the quality of the main research by assessing the experience.
- reveals unexpected extraneous variables
- tasks may be confusing
- participants may have discovered the aims easily at one point
-may alter tasks to make it less time consuming
- behavioural categories may not be fully operationalised

Researcher needs to show their written study to other experts in their field
Unaccounted for variables may be identified
However this means that the study lacks internal validity and needs to be repeated
