What is a pilot study?
A
a small-scale trial run of a specific research investigation to test out the planned procedures and identify any flaws and areas for improvement

Why are pilot studies used?
A
- checks if ppts understand standardised instructions and if timings are adequate
- checks if the materials used are suitable
- checks confounding variables are not affecting the results
- Checks if behavioural categories work in an observation
- to determine what the behavioural categories will be
- due to direct experience and feedback, the researcher will make changes to address any issues raised before the main study is conducted.
- saves time and money being wasted
