What is the 1st pillar of Islam?
Shahadah (faith)
Muslims declaration of faith.
Reciting 3 times that Allah is the only god + Muhammad is prophet
What is the 2nd pillar of Islam?
Salat (prayer)
Muslims pray 5x a day—> dawn, midday, late afternoon, evening, after sunset
Muslims will perform ritual washing before praying eg in a mosque
Face Mecca when praying
Men + women pray separately
Certain positions (sitting + standing) while praying
What is the 3rd pillar of Islam?
Zakat (charity/ almsgiving)
Muslims give 2.5% of income to charity
Poor Muslims don’t have to pay, instead they can perform zakat through good deeds

What is the 4th pillar of Islam?
Sawm (fasting)
Takes place during Ramadan
Muslims can only eat after sunset and before sunrise
Pregnant, sick people + children in puberty don’t have to take part
Why do Muslims fast?
To gain spiritual strength
Self control
To feel sympathy for the poor
What is iftar?
Food that breaks the fast
What is Ramadan?
9th month of the lunar calendar, when Muslims fast.
(Ends with Eid-al-fitr, an Islamic holiday)

Hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca
Mecca = holiest city
Pilgrimage (journey to foreign place)
Muslims try to go here at least once in their lifetime
What Muslims are exempt from performing the pilgrimage to Mecca?
Incapable Muslims; weak, sick or elderly
